The Day that the Olympics was handed over to London (24th August 2008)
This was a Sunday full of excitement on Weymouth Beach. There was an enormous screen for all to see so that the closing of the Beijing Olympics wouldn't be missed by those taking part in the Beach activities.
As usual for the Sunday before the Bank Holiday Monday in August, the Melcombe Regis Rotary Club had organised Dragon Boat racing, the BBC took some footage for use in their news casts and many thousands of pounds was raised for charity.
![]() The Olympic flag was taken from the beach to Portland Harbour by one of the Dragon Boats, escorted by The Weymouth Rowing club.
After the handover, Weymouth & Portland waters officially became the venue of the next Olympics and the first race in the Olympic waters, only minutes after the handover, was won by Wessex Dragons in 1 minute 36 seconds. A fine display.
